so my birthday was pretty excellent.
it ended up being more a birthday weekend because mike has been feeling bad that he's been gone for work a lot lately. we haven't really gotten to spend any time together for the past several weeks.
he took me to the zoo on saturday to see the baby elephant and she is super cute. i will post pictures of her later. she kept hiding behind her momma, so they are not the greatest.
and mike was so excited about the presents he bought me that he gave them to me on friday night. he got me this super cool ipod thing for my car. you install it in the back of your cd player and run a cord through your glove box. so now i just plug my ipod in and play it through the cd player controls. (it's kinda hard to explain how it works, but it is awesome) he also got me a wii, so i have been playing a lot of bowling.
on sunday joey took me and mike to this Louisiana/creole restaurant under the morrison bridge that was excellent. we had frog legs and alligator bites and super good jambalaya. and if you have left-overs they wrap them up in foil and create foil animals for you. joey got a crab and i got a swan. the people next to us got a snail, bunny, and giraffe.

the past few days have been extremely annoying because micheal's friend that i can't stand, suddenly decided to come visit. he has been here since wed. he's finally leaving sometime tomorrow. i really can't stand him; he's so very annoying.
he's one of those people who thinks he knows everything about everything, when in all reality he knows very little about very little. this entire time he has been claiming that he knows all this stuff about portland, just because he visited once like 4 years ago. he tried to tell me that he knows more about the city than i do. i'm the one who freaking lives here!!!
the most irritating part of his visit has been that on thursday when i got home from work around 5:30 he was already completely drunk. he couldn't even stand up without leaning against the wall. all night long he was shouting that the walls in the apartment halls are purple because earlier mike said that they were pink. he was shouting like a three year old "no, no they are purple, purple, purple, purple, purple...." i really wanted to push him off the balcony. while shouting he ate an entire bag of chips mike just bought and dumped crumbs all over the floor that i had just vacuumed the day before. and to end the whole terrible evening. i drove him and mike to the store to get a few things for dinner and on the way back to the apartment he decided that it would be hilarious to fart the worst smelling fart in the world in my car! it still smelled bad the next morning when i went to work!!!
if he is still here tomorrow when i get home from work, i am going to completely freak out. i just may push him off the balcony.

the only good part of this weekend has been that it is beautiful outside: sunny and about 70-75. it's wonderful. we went downtown and wandered around yesterday and today we, along with joey, went to the most excellent breakfast place. they make awesome biscuit sandwiches and that' it. i got a fried chicken, pickle, grainy mustard, and honey sandwich; it was a glorious sandwich of sticky honey covered fried chicken on the best buttermilk biscuit i have ever had. we got them to go and ate them in the park. it was a pretty awesome breakfast.

on a semi-related note, mike got this portland magazine that has an article on all the great places to get different breakfast foods all around portland. for example the best place for biscuits is pine street, which is where we went today and then there are the best places for dim sum, pancakes, steak and eggs, etc. last night joey and i decided that every sunday we are going to go to a different place listed in the article until we have gone to all of them. there are quite a few, so i think we have our sundays planned out for a while.

today started out not so good, but has become a most excellent day!

i applied for a job on craigslist and twenty mins later the company called me and told me if i could start tomorrow morning then i am hired as a temp. and if things work out they will hire me on permanently!!!

thank freaking god! it's been so very long since i have had a job. i really hope this works out and they keep me.

i will be working for an engineering company. i'm not really sure what they actually do; it sounds very complicated. hopefully they don't expect me to engineer something.

i have been a member of _ravelry_ for about five months now and have greatly loved the many, many free patterns and other crochet, knitting, and yarn related stuff on the website; but today i found that there is so much more on the site. groups! i have joined several crocheting and portland related groups, but what i am really excited about is the group entirely devoted to malabrigo yarns. malabrigo has become my new obsession. they make the most amazing merino wool yarns! what is causing my excitement is twofold: the group has contests with free yarns as the prizes and more importantly is several of the members get trial samples of malabrigo's new yarns. i must befriend these people and get trial yarns too!
i think each day i become more and more crochet and yarn obsessed. i really want to learn to spin my own yarn and dye yarns. i met this girl who dyes her own yarns and sells them to my favorite local yarn store, as well as online. she is super interesting and i think i need to convince her to teach me all she knows.

i have been in a really terrible mood for the last week or so.

i was sick, which made me initially crabby and then i had to buy a $90 battery for my car. i didn't get a second interview for this job that i would have been perfect for. i had to pay $80 to get my name changed on my driver's license and title for my car. and now i have to pay the cable and electric bill.

and i think i have decided that going to grad school wouldn't be a good idea. so i now have no idea what to do.

FINALLY!

in my interview yesterday someone actually told me that having an english degree would really help me get a job. it was amazing not only did she say having a degree was really important, but that she'd rather hire someone with an english degree than a business degree!
yes, i did not get a totally useless degree!!
also she told me they had 300 people apply for the job in the first 36 hours, so they had to shut the add down. that's a retarded number of people one freaking job! no wonder it's so hard to find something.
i really hope this woman calls me on monday for a second interview. the job sounds pretty excellent.

on an unrelated note, i could barely talk this morning. i have been coughing so much that my voice was barely audible when i woke up and my brain is trying to revolt against me. i had to try to schedule an interview this morning and i think i sounded like a nasty hacking old lady smoker. i really hope not.

it is so freaking cold, and with the possibility of snow, i don't feel like i can leave the apartment. i need to go get christmas presents, but i think that i may die if i attempt to drive or get stranded somewhere if it starts to really snow, like the news is saying it will.

michael has gone to tualatin to work on the jeep with joey and i'm worried it will starting snowing and he won't be able to get back until way later tonight or maybe tomorrow.

and yesterday when michael and i went out in the jeep there was a cup of coffee that was left in the car overnight. it was frozen! half a cup of coffee frozen hard as a rock in a large cylinder!

i didn't realize i moved to the freaking arctic!

Crafty time

i have been crocheting like crazy lately and will be selling the recent creations as soon as i can take some pictures that don't look like crap. i have also decided that pom-poms on top of hats are pretty excellent and make me giggle.

i am also going to start creating my own patterns because i have been running in to trouble with a lot of the patterns i have been using. most of them are too yarn-type specific and end up all wonky if you don't use the same type of yarn as recommended. i recently bought an encyclopedia of crochet stitches, so i think i should be able to create some pretty good patterns.

my discovery of the day:
there is a store in portland where you can MAKE YOUR OWN YARN!
you can go through all their various fibers and colors and combine them to make your own yarn!!! and they will spin it together for you. it sounds pretty awesome, so i think i might go make some yarn tomorrow! (so long as it's not super expensive)

YARN

Portland has the most amazing yarn stores.
Not just one or two, but like ten of them that only sell yarns, felting supplies, crochet and knitting supplies.
My favorite place is the yarn garden; they have rooms and rooms of yarns and the people who work there are super nice and helpful. And after you spend $100 you get a gift card for $25!
I have brought this amazing kettle dyed red mahogany wool from Uruguay and bamboo blended charcoal colored yarn. I am going to make two sweaters. I am super excited to start making stuff again.
Time for crochet!

our house is a maze of boxes and stuff.
but at least i am almost done packing.
we have a ton of stuff, but less than i thought.

on another note, i got to see erica earlier this week.
i haven't seen her in three years.
we had a wonderful evening of trying on dresses, drinking frozen lemonade, and rating shoes on a scale of "my grandma would wear to a hooker would wear."
sadly most fell toward the hooker end of the scale.
it's strange how someone you have known since you were four years old can always feel like your best friend even though you haven't seen each other in years.

and i also picked up my wedding dress!
